Malam – Celebrating the Balinese Art of Batik

Malam celebrates the traditional Balinese Batik technique, combining ancestral craftsmanship with sustainable materials and natural dyes.

Known as the Island of the Gods, Bali is a tropical paradise of sea, forests, and volcanoes — and home to one of the world’s oldest textile arts. The term Batik comes from the Javanese word ambatik, meaning “fabric with many drops”, and refers to the meticulous process of decorating cloth with wax and dye.

Practiced across Indonesia and South Asia since the 5th century, Batik was once used in sacred ceremonies and has evolved into an art form that bridges tradition and modern design.
The process begins with handwoven organic cotton, on which artisans apply beeswax to outline the motifs. The fabric is then dyed with natural pigments derived from mangroves, leaves, and local plants. Once dry, the wax is melted away in hot water, revealing the intricate hand-painted patterns beneath.

For the Malam collection, EFFEI collaborates with Yagasu, an Indonesian non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local artisans and preserving traditional crafts through sustainable production practices.

Every Malam piece is handcrafted in 100% cotton, lined with organic cotton, and finished using eco-conscious methods.
Slight variations in color and pattern are the hallmark of authentic handmade craftsmanship, making each garment unique.
